Tax season in Barbados can be stressful for business owners — but with the right preparation, it doesn't have to be. Here's what you need to know to stay compliant and avoid unnecessary penalties in 2025.
Key filing deadlines
Staying on top of deadlines is the single most important thing you can do to avoid penalties. The Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) takes late filing seriously, and the penalties add up quickly.
- Corporation Tax returns — due within three months of your financial year-end
- Value Added Tax (VAT) — monthly or quarterly depending on your registration type
- National Insurance Scheme (NIS) — monthly contributions due by the 15th of the following month
- Pay As You Earn (PAYE) — monthly remittances due by the 15th of the following month
Common pitfalls we see every year
1. Mixing personal and business finances This is the most common issue we encounter. When personal and business transactions run through the same account, it makes bookkeeping significantly harder and can raise questions during a tax review.
2. Missing VAT registration thresholds If your annual taxable supplies exceed the VAT registration threshold, you are required to register. Many businesses cross this threshold without realising it and find themselves with a liability they weren't expecting.
3. Not keeping adequate records The BRA requires businesses to maintain records for a minimum of six years. Poor record-keeping is both a compliance risk and makes preparing accurate returns much harder.
4. Claiming disallowable expenses Not all business expenses are deductible for tax purposes. Understanding what you can and cannot claim is important — overclaiming can trigger scrutiny, and underclaiming means paying more tax than you need to.
How to be better prepared
The best tax strategy starts at the beginning of the year, not at the end. Working with a qualified accountant throughout the year means your records are complete and accurate when filing time comes, you've planned your tax position proactively, and you avoid the last-minute scramble that leads to errors.
